6 Acting Tips for Beginners

Thinking of starting a career as an actor or actress? Here’s a few tips to help you immerse yourself in the world of performing arts and succeed while doing it!

 

  1. Learn your lines!

This may sound like an obvious first tip, but it is essential to your success as a beginner actor to know your lines inside and out. In order to have an outstanding first few performances, you need to know every single line perfectly. Once you know your lines, you can begin to play around with the emotions of your character and get familiar with the other components of the scene.

 

  1. Research your character!

When you go through your script, highlight everything that is known about your character. This will help you complete a full picture of your character’s personality quirks and how you can most accurately portray them. Practice every aspect of your character, like how they smile, how they laugh, what makes them tick, and anything else you can think of that would help you become the character.

 

  1. Be curious!

You can become a better actor by observing the people around you and how they behave. Go to your local coffee shop, mall, park, or any other place with a lot of people and observe their natural inclinations. This will help you get into the mindset of other people, which will help build out your character’s personality quirks, especially if they have qualities that you don’t have naturally.

 

  1. Don’t be afraid to look silly!

Acting is about putting yourself out there and taking risks! Feel free to let your guard down and act out exactly what is on your mind. There are no right or wrong answers when it comes to acting. Try to relax and embrace whatever acting throws your way.

 

  1. Consume more content!

Try to watch, read, and experience as many books, plays, films, and TV shows as possible to broaden your knowledge and expose yourself to as many types of acting as you can. This will help you understand your characters better and help you become a better actor as you learn from the professionals.

 

  1. Take acting classes!

Acting classes are a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the world of performing arts alongside people who have a similar knowledge base. You’ll learn so much about yourself and about your classmates by taking an acting class from someone with experience in the field. You may have natural talent, but putting that talent into practice through classes will surely take your acting to the next level.
